Sintering of UHTCs by hot pressing using several sintering aids
Currently used space shuttle will retire in 2010 and the next generation of re-usable atmospheric re-entry vehicles are under development. Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) are greatly focused on as the structural materials of them. UHTCs have their melting temperatures over 3000℃ and shows excellent properties such as high heat resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, and electric conductivity. However, UHTCs also show low sinterability because of their strong covalent character. Therefore, we have to sinter them in extremely high pressure and temperature for the densification. Moreover, more than 15 % of sintering aids are needed in general. Thus, we are challenging to look for novel sintering aids, which are suited for sintering in smaller amount, and optimizing the sintering conditions.
